Press Releases

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Terri Sewell issued the following statement about the President’s Fiscal Year 2016 Budget released today:

“I fully support the President’s Fiscal Year 2016 Budget request. The President recognizes that prosperity must be shared, rather than concentrated in the hands of a select few. His Fiscal Year 2016 Budget reflects his commitment to helping the poor, protecting our national security, and preserving historical sites while reducing our deficit responsibly.

“As we approach the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, I am pleased that the President’s budget also includes a commitment to preserve a critical part of our history. The President acknowledged the historical significance of the March from Selma to Montgomery in his State of the Union, and I applaud his efforts to ensure the ‘sacred’ right to vote is protected and its importance is preserved for future generations.

“The Fiscal Year 2016 Budget dedicates $50 million to restore and protect key sites across the United States of significance to the struggle for civil rights, including the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site, and the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. It also includes another $30 million for a Historic Preservation Fund that will be available through competitive grants, and another $2.5 million available to Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

“I urge my colleagues in Congress to carefully consider the President’s Budget and to work with the Administration to implement the President’s initiatives to create ladders of opportunities. There should be no partisan divide; Democrats and Republicans must work together to grow our economy and help those who most need it.”
