Reps. Sewell and Ocasio-Cortez Selected to Co-Convene House Democrats' Cost of Living Healthcare Working Group

Washington D.C. — Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) announced that House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has selected her to serve as Co-Convener of House Democrats' Cost of Living Healthcare Working Group alongside Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14).

The Healthcare Working Group is one of five Cost of Living Working Groups established by House Democratic leadership to further develop Democrats' affirmative agenda focused on lowering costs and making life more affordable for the American people. The other working groups will focus on Housing, Gas and Utilities, Groceries and Goods, and Caregiving. Each working group will be led by an ideologically diverse team of co-conveners working closely with Democratic Caucus and committee leaders.

“We are grateful that Leader Jeffries has selected us to serve as Co-Conveners of the Cost of Living Healthcare Working Group," said the Representatives. "Healthcare costs remain one of the biggest challenges facing working families, and ensuring every American has access to quality, affordable healthcare has never been more important."

"As Republicans and the Trump Administration pursue devastating cuts to healthcare programs that millions rely on, Democrats must put forward a bold vision that lowers costs, expands access, and strengthens care for future generations," continued the Representatives. “We look forward to working with our colleagues across the Caucus to develop forward-looking policy solutions that deliver meaningful results for the American people."

Rep. Sewell brings extensive healthcare policy experience to the role. She serves on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over Medicare and other critical healthcare programs, and currently serves as Chair of the New Democrat Coalition Health Care Working Group. Throughout her time in Congress, Rep. Sewell has been a leading advocate for expanding access to affordable, quality healthcare, strengthening Medicare and Medicaid, protecting the Affordable Care Act, lowering prescription drug costs, and reducing health disparities in underserved communities.

The Healthcare Working Group will engage Members from across the Democratic Caucus and work collaboratively with Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal (MA-01) and Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone (NJ-06) to develop policy recommendations aimed at lowering costs and expanding access to healthcare. The effort reflects House Democrats' commitment to advancing an agenda that addresses the everyday challenges facing working people and delivers tangible results for communities across the country.

Rep. Sewell Accepting Applications for Fall 2026 Internships

Washington D.C. — The Washington D.C. and district offices of U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) are currently accepting applications for fall 2026 interns. College students and recent graduates interested in government and public service are invited to apply for a chance to spend the semester working closely with Rep. Sewell’s staff on a variety of important legislative, communications, and administrative tasks.

“Interns are our future leaders, advocates, and changemakers,” said Rep. Sewell. “Through my fall internship program, students have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in Congress, learn about the legislative process, and help serve the constituents of Alabama’s 7th Congressional District. As someone who benefited from mentors who opened doors and created opportunities, I know how important it is for young people to see themselves in positions of leadership and public service. I encourage all interested students to apply and take advantage of this unique opportunity.”

Interns will have the opportunity to research legislation, draft letters, compile media clips, answer constituent calls, and attend legislative hearings, briefings, and seminars.

Students with connections to Alabama that will be beginning their junior or senior years in an undergraduate program by September 2026 are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates should be proactive, professional, dependable, and have an interest in federal policy and the legislative process. Candidates should also possess strong written and oral communication skills, the ability to multitask, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.

The Office of U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate in the hiring process based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, national origin, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, genetic information, age, military service, or other non-merit factors. BIPOC applicants and individuals in underrepresented communities are encouraged to apply.

The deadline to apply is Monday, July 6, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. CDT.
Rep. Sewell Statement on Alabama's Scheduled Execution of Jeffery Lee

Montgomery, AL — Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement regarding Alabama's scheduled execution of Jeffery Lee:

"Jeffery Lee’s crimes are heinous and inexcusable. My heart remains with the families of Jimmy Ellis and Elaine Thompson who have endured decades of unimaginable grief. I believe that Mr. Lee deserves to be held fully accountable for his actions. I am also deeply troubled by Alabama's decision to proceed with his execution for several reasons.

"A jury of Mr. Lee's peers sentenced him to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Despite the jury’s careful review of numerous factors, their recommendation was overridden by a judge—a practice that was rightfully abolished by Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Legislature in 2017. Today, Alabama seeks to carry out a death sentence that a jury did not impose and would be illegal under current law.

"I am also concerned by the significant and unresolved legal questions surrounding Alabama's method of execution. Just this week, the Eleventh Circuit recognized serious constitutional concerns over the use of nitrogen gas to suffocate prisoners. Courts are now in the process of considering alternative methods. Before such questions are resolved, it is difficult to justify proceeding with an irreversible punishment.

"For these reasons, I urge Governor Ivey to commute Mr. Lee's sentence to life without parole, consistent with the jury's original recommendation. At a minimum, I respectfully ask the Governor to pause this scheduled execution until the pending litigation has run its course. To proceed risks undermining public confidence in our criminal justice system and creating the appearance that Alabama is rushing a process that demands the utmost care, transparency, and scrutiny.

"I recognize that reasonable people hold differing views on capital punishment. However, every Alabamian should agree that the administration of justice must be fair, deliberate, and beyond reproach. Justice requires accountability. It also requires fairness. In a matter of life and death, we must ensure that both are served."

Rep. Sewell Votes Against Republican Reconciliation Bill

Washington D.C. — Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) voted against the Republican reconciliation bill which fails to lower costs for working families while directing billions of taxpayer dollars toward President Trump's mass deportation agenda and political priorities.

"The American people are struggling with the rising costs of groceries, housing, health care, and everyday necessities," said Rep. Sewell."Yet instead of helping hardworking families make ends meet, Republicans have chosen to spend billions more taxpayer dollars funding Donald Trump's cruel immigration agenda, rewarding the wealthy, and giving this Administration even more unchecked power. This bill does nothing to lower costs, nothing to strengthen health care, and nothing to improve the lives of the people I represent. That's why I voted no."

Rep. Sewell criticized the legislation for providing an additional $70 billion in funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) without any oversight or accountability while failing to address the economic challenges facing American families.

"At a time when families are looking for relief, Republicans are once again putting the interests of the wealthy and well-connected ahead of the needs of everyday Americans," Sewell continued. "We should be investing in affordable health care, lowering costs, strengthening food assistance programs, and creating economic opportunity—not writing blank checks for ICE to brutalize American citizens and law-abiding immigrants."

Sewell remains committed to lowering costs, protecting critical programs, and ensuring taxpayer dollars are used to improve the lives of American families.

Rep. Sewell Statement on Supreme Court Decision Allowing Alabama to Use Racially Discriminatory Congressional Map in 2026 Midterm Elections

Washington D.C. — U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement regarding the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court allowing Alabama to use its racially discriminatory congressional map in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections:

"Once again, the right-wing Supreme Court has put its blatant partisanship on full display, allowing Alabama Republicans to change the rules in the eleventh hour and use a racist congressional map that federal courts have found—on two separate occasions—intentionally discriminates against Black Alabama voters. This is just the latest in a pattern of outrageous Supreme Court decisions that help Republicans desperately cling to power ahead of the midterm elections while diluting Black voices and erasing decades of hard-fought civil rights progress.

"Black voters in Alabama deserve more than just some representation. We deserve fair representation. That means two congressional seats where African Americans have the opportunity to elect candidates of our choice.

"Make no mistake. It is the people of Alabama—not the Supreme Court—who will have the last word. Now that the congressional map has been set, it is up to Alabama voters to vote like we’ve never voted before and send a message that cannot be ignored—that all voices deserve to be heard in our democracy.

"No matter how hard Alabama state officials may try, they will not succeed in silencing our voices. We will not go back to the Jim Crow era. The fight for fair representation continues."

Rep. Sewell Statement on Federal Court Ruling Blocking Alabama's Racially Discriminatory Congressional Map

Birmingham, AL — U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement regarding the federal court ruling blocking the State of Alabama from using its intentionally racially discriminatory 2023 congressional map:

“This decision is a victory for fair representation and a powerful rebuke of Alabama’s continued efforts to silence Black voters. Once again, a federal court confirmed what we have said all along: Alabama’s 2023 congressional map was intentionally designed to discriminate against Black voters and dilute our political power.

"When Alabama Republicans passed the 2023 congressional map, they defied federal court orders, the Constitution, and the Voting Rights Act in a desperate attempt to preserve their grip on power. Rather than drawing a fair map, they obstructed, delayed, and intentionally discriminated against Black voters. Today, the court made clear that those tactics will not stand.

"I applaud the three-judge panel for upholding the rule of law and reaffirming that racial discrimination has no place in our redistricting process. While we know that this legal battle is far from over, today’s ruling sends a clear message: Black voters in Alabama cannot and will not be silenced.”

Rep. Sewell Speaks Out Against Continued Erosion of the Voting Rights Act Following Callais Decision

Washington D.C. — Last night, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) joined her colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus for a Special Order Hour on the House Floor condemning the continued erosion of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 following the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Louisiana v. Callais.

Watch on YouTube here.

In her remarks, Sewell warned that recent Supreme Court decisions are undermining hard-fought voting rights protections secured during the Civil Rights Movement and threatening fair representation for Black communities across the South.

“For me, this fight is personal,” said Rep. Sewell. “I grew up in Selma in the shadow of the Civil Rights Movement. I represent the historic cities of Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Marion, and the Black Belt. Our communities carry the scars of Bloody Sunday, the Birmingham church bombings, fire hoses, police dogs, and violent resistance to the simple idea that Black Americans deserve the full promise of citizenship.”

Sewell condemned the systematic effort to dismantle the protections guaranteed under the Voting Rights Act.

“People in my district bled for the right to vote. Some died for it,” Sewell said. “And now, six decades later, extremists are trying to drag this country backward. They are trying to erase our hard-fought progress and silence the voices of the very communities that marched, that sacrificed, that organized to make American democracy real for everyone.”

During the Special Order Hour, Sewell connected the Court’s ruling in Callais to the broader weakening of federal voting rights protections since the Court’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder.

“In 2013, the Supreme Court’s disastrous decision in Shelby v. Holder gutted the heart of the Voting Rights Act...” Sewell said. “And what happened next? Exactly what voting rights advocates warned would happen. States across the South rushed to impose restrictive voting laws. They closed polling places, purged voter rolls, and redrew maps designed to dilute Black political power.”

“Now, with the Court’s recent decision in Callais, we are witnessing yet another dangerous step backward, another attack on the principle of fair representation and equal justice under the law,” she continued.

Sewell also renewed her call for Congress to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, legislation she introduced to restore and modernize the protections of the Voting Rights Act.

Closing her remarks, Sewell delivered a forceful call to action and highlighted the upcoming "All Roads Lead to the South" mass rally planned for Saturday, May 16 at 1:00 p.m. at the Alabama State Capitol.

“If your vote didn’t matter, they wouldn’t be working so hard to take it away,” Sewell said. “We are not going back. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever... We will march, we will fight, we will organize, and we will vote until victory is won.”

Rep. Sewell Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Allowing Alabama to Proceed with Suppressing Black Representation

Washington D.C. — U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement regarding the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court allowing the State of Alabama to proceed with suppressing Black representation:

"Today’s decision by the Supreme Court to allow Alabama to move forward with its discriminatory congressional map is a stunning departure from legal precedent and another direct attack on Black voters in Alabama.

"Let’s be clear. Alabama lawmakers intentionally discriminated against Black voters in drawing the 2023 map. A federal district court said so. The Supreme Court said so. Yet now, in this stunning reversal, the Court’s right-wing majority has completely ignored its previous rulings in order to give state officials the green light to suppress Black representation in Alabama. Moreover, the Court has injected needless chaos and confusion into an election that has already begun while rewarding state officials who openly defied court orders in bad faith.

"This fight is not over. Black Alabamians have fought too hard and sacrificed too much to be dragged backward by extremist politicians and an activist Court. Black voters make up nearly one-third of Alabama's electorate and we deserve no less than two seats where we can select a candidate of our choice. We are not going back!"

Rep. Sewell Statement on Alabama State Legislature's Passage of Legislation Paving the Way to Erase Black Representation

Montgomery, AL — Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement regarding the legislation passed by the Alabama State Legislature to pave the way to erase Black representation through partisan gerrymandering:

“This is a dark day for the State of Alabama. The Foot Soldiers of the Civil Rights Movement fought, bled, and died to overturn Jim Crow in the South and secure Black representation in government. Today, Republicans in the Alabama State House passed legislation to erase their legacy and suppress the voices of Black Alabamians.

“To be clear, the State of Alabama remains under a federal court injunction which prevents the state from redistricting until 2030. The Supreme Court has yet to rule on lifting the injunction. However, Alabama Republicans’ rush to suppress Black representation while the injunction remains demonstrates the dire need for federal protections for minority voters.

“We will not stand by quietly while Alabama Republicans try to erase the progress secured by the Civil Rights Movement and take our state back to the era of Jim Crow. The people of Alabama must stand up, speak out, and get out to the polls. If the courts and our state legislature won't protect the rights of Black and minority voters, then we must organize, mobilize, and vote like our lives depend on it. We must reaffirm, through action, that every American deserves a voice in our democracy.”

Rep. Sewell Statement on Announcement of Special Session of Alabama Legislature

Birmingham, AL — U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement regarding Governor Kay Ivey's announcement of a special session of the Alabama Legislature to dilute the voting power of African American voters:

"Alabama Republicans are wasting no time eliminating representation for African Americans in our state. Despite Black voters making up nearly one-third of Alabama’s electorate, Republican state leaders are desperate to revert us back to a map that silences our voices, dilutes our power, and denies us a fair seat at the table.

"This corrupt move runs counter to everything John Lewis and civil rights leaders marched, fought, and bled for. It threatens to roll back centuries of hard-fought progress and demonstrates exactly why the protections of the Voting Rights Act were needed in the first place.

"The court order barring Alabama from redrawing its map still stands, and our litigating partners are ready to vigorously defend it. We will not take this sitting down. Our communities are prepared to organize, mobilize, and demand the fair representation that we as Alabama voters deserve.

"Bring it on."

Rep. Sewell Votes NO on Republicans' Partisan Farm Bill that Slashes Food Assistance

Washington D.C. — Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) voted against H.R. 7567, also known as the Farm Bill, which cements Republicans' $187 billion cut to SNAP—the largest cut to food assistance in history—for the next five years.

"Despite our successful efforts to secure provisions that would benefit rural Alabama, House Republicans have made it impossible for me to support this Farm Bill by continuing their cruel cuts to SNAP," said Rep. Sewell. "At a time when so many Alabama families are already struggling with rising grocery costs, I cannot support a bill that would continue take food out of the mouths of hungry children, seniors, and veterans. Moreover, this version of the Farm Bill rubberstamps Trump's reckless tariffs and his war on Iran which are hurting Alabama farmers and contributing to the soaring price of food, energy, fertilizer, and farming equipment."

"I hope that my Senate colleagues will remove these cruel cuts to food assistance so that I can support a strong, bipartisan Farm Bill that meets the needs of Alabama's farmers and working families," continued Sewell.

Rep. Sewell secured a number of key wins for Alabama, including provisions to:

Address Alabama's rural wastewater crisis: Rep. Sewell secured the inclusion of her Rural Decentralized Water Systems Reauthorization Act which she introduced with Rep. Mike Rogers in March. The bill would reauthorize a USDA grant program that Sewell created in the 2018 Farm Bill which provides funding to help low- and middle-income families install or upgrade their wastewater systems in areas where connecting to a municipal line is not feasible. This bill expands eligibility to those making 80% or lower of the Median Non-Metropolitan Household Income (previously 60%).

Support Alabama's rural forestry sector: The bill includes Rep. Sewell's SAWMILL Act which will bring more resources for rural forestry processing to Alabama's 7th Congressional District.

Strengthen Alabama's Land Grant HBCUs: The Farm Bill expands research funding for 1890 Land Grant institutions and authorizes upgrades to agricultural and food sciences facilities. The bill also reauthorizes scholarships for students at 1890 Land Grant institutions through 2031.

Allow greater flexibility for SNAP recipients: Amid Republican efforts to restrict the types of food eligible for purchase by SNAP recipients, Rep. Sewell co-sponsored a provision to allow SNAP recipients to purchase hot rotisserie chickens. The provision was included and passed in the Farm Bill.

Rep. Sewell Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Gutting the Voting Rights Act

Washington D.C. — Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais gutting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act:

“Today’s decision is a devastating blow to American democracy and a death sentence for the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The right-wing Supreme Court has not only turned its back on decades of precedent and ignored the intent of Congress and the will of the people, but it has weakened the foundational principle safeguarding fair representation for Black and minority voters.

"For decades, Section 2 has been the essential tool that allowed minority voters to challenge discriminatory maps and defend our right to meaningful political power. By gutting it, the Court has made it easier for bad actors to discriminate and harder for us to fight that discrimination in court. The decision is a gift to President Trump and his voter suppression scheme, making it easier for Republicans to steal congressional seats by diluting the voices of Black and minority voters.

"As the representative of Alabama’s 7th District—a district whose very existence was secured through the Voting Rights Act—I know firsthand what is at stake. This decision will determine whether communities like ours can elect leaders who understand their lived experiences and fight for their needs. Its impact will not be confined to one state or one election cycle. It will shape who gets heard in our democracy, who gets counted, and whose voice gets left behind.

"The attacks on our voting rights are coming from every angle. Now more than ever, communities across the nation must mobilize and vote like we've never voted before. If the Court won't protect the rights of Black and minority voters, Congress must act. We must revise and pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the full protections of the VRA. And we must reaffirm, through action, that every American deserves an equal voice in our democracy.

"The right to vote is the lifeblood of our democracy. In the spirit of John Lewis, we will continue to make ‘Good Trouble’ until the promise of democracy is real for all.”

Terri Sewell (AL-07) spoke on the House Floor to honor the 27th South Eastern Regional Director, Dr. Tracey Morant Adams.
Rep. Sewell: Mr. Speaker, as we begin the 94th Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority South Eastern Regional Conference in Birmingham, Alabama, I rise to honor the extraordinary leadership of Dr. Tracey Morant Adams, the 27th South Eastern Regional Director.

From her initiation on the campus of University of Montevallo to her tenure as the 27th South Eastern Regional Director, Tracey has embodied the values of sisterhood, scholarship, and service to all mankind.

During her four-year tenure, she has led the work of over 13,000 members across Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. She has launched signature initiatives that have strengthened chapters, expanded voter engagement, and advanced economic empowerment. Tracey's leadership is matched by her extraordinary professional achievements, as well.

On a personal note, Tracey and I share more than just titles and service. We have a 30-year friendship and sisterhood. As I reflect on Tracey's service, I cannot help but think of my mother, Nancy Gardner Sewall, the 18th South Eastern Regional Director. Mom would be so proud to see how Tracey has followed in her footsteps, protecting the legacy of our beloved sorority while boldly imagining our future. I can almost hear my mother saying, 'well done, my daughter, well done.'

On behalf of the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, I ask my colleagues to join me in honoring Dr. Tracey Morant Adams, the 27 South Eastern Regional Director, on the occasion of the 94th South Eastern Regional Conference in Birmingham, Alabama.

We are so proud of you, Tracey. Well done, well done, well done.

Background

In 2022, Dr. Tracey Morant Adams was elected as the South Eastern Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., overseeing the work of more than 13,000 members across Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama—one of AKA's most dynamic regions. She was unanimously elected to serve a second term, which reflects both the confidence her peers have in her leadership and the sustained impact on the region's strategic growth. Under her visionary direction, the region has expanded its service reach, chartered new chapters, and launched innovative member empowerment programs.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, an international service organization, was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. in 1908. It is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women. Its mission is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and friendship among college women, study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women to improve their social structure, maintain a progressive interest in college life, and be of service to all mankind.

Rep. Sewell Presses HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Comments Suggesting Black Children Should Be “Re-Parented”

Washington D.C. — Today, during a House Ways and Means Committee hearing, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) questioned Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about his previous comments suggesting that Black children with ADHD should be “re-parented.” Sewell pressed the Secretary to clarify and account for those remarks, which he now falsely denies.

Watch the full exchange here.

In her opening, Sewell noted that the Secretary has made “a number of outlandish and frankly disturbing comments—both before and during [his] tenure as Secretary of Health and Human Services.” Sewell cited a 2024 interview in which Kennedy discussed ADHD diagnoses among Black children and suggested that some should be “re-parented." When asked directly about his comments, Kennedy falsely denied making them despite publicly accessible online footage.

Sewell pressed Kennedy about his qualifications, noting that he is not a board-certified physician, has no medical degree, and has never parented a Black child. She underscored the implications of his comments, stating that despite this lack of medical training, he appeared to suggest “that the federal government should take Black children away from their families, re-parent them, and send them off to ‘wellness farms’ instead of providing them with evidence-based medical care.”

Sewell reminded the Secretary of our nation's "long and painful history of separating Black children from their families,” from slavery to Jim Crow to modern child-welfare disparities. She emphasized that Black children are still removed from their homes at disproportionately high rates, often due to systemic bias rather than actual harm.

“For you to suggest that Black families are not capable of raising their own children is deeply offensive,” Sewell said.

Sewell also implored the Secretary to consider the impact of his words given the enormous power he yields.

"When you suggest re-parenting Black children, when you sow doubt about the safety of vaccines, and when you promote unproven statements that have no basis in science, you endanger the lives of everyone across this nation."

Sewell concluded, "I expect, and the American people expect, that you choose your words with sincereness and with seriousness—the seriousness that your position demands. American lives are at stake, and it's time that you start acting like it, sir."

Rep. Sewell Honors the Life and Legacy of Attorney J. Mason Davis on the House Floor

Washington D.C. — Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) spoke on the House Floor to honor the life and legacy of Attorney J. Mason Davis, a pioneering attorney and civic leader from Birmingham, Alabama, who passed away on April 4, 2026, at the age of 90. Funeral services will take place the weekend of Friday, April 17. Public viewing hours are scheduled for Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Davenport and Harris Funeral Homes, and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Boutwell Auditorium.

Watch on YouTube here.

Rep. Sewell: I rise today to honor the extraordinary life, legacy, and service of J. Mason Davis, an attorney from Alabama, a towering figure in Alabama’s legal community, and a steadfast advocate for justice, equality, and human dignity.

Mr. Davis passed away on April 4, 2026, at the age of 90, a profound loss for Alabama and for all who believe in the power of the law to advance fairness and opportunity.

Mr. Davis pursued his education with distinction and determination, graduating from Talladega College and later earning his law degree from Howard University School of Law.

Mr. Davis then returned to Alabama. He entered a legal landscape defined by segregation and entrenched inequality. Rather than accept those conditions, he challenged them. He became one of the first Black attorneys to practice in Birmingham’s courts, and he used his skill, courage, and conviction to represent individuals and communities who had long been denied a voice.

Beyond the courtroom, Mr. Davis was a mentor, a teacher, a bridge-builder. He served in leadership roles at one of Alabama’s most respected law firms, and helped open doors of opportunity for young attorneys to follow in his footsteps.

His contributions were numerous. Alabama is a better place because J. Mason Davis lived, worked, and served there. The legal profession is better because he insisted that it live up to its highest ideals. And our nation is better because he never stopped believing in the possibility of a more just and inclusive society.

To his family, friends, colleagues, and all who he shaped by his wisdom and generosity, we extend our deepest condolences. May they find comfort in knowing that his legacy endures in the laws that he changed, in the lives that he touched, and in the generation he led.

I ask my colleagues to join me in honoring the extraordinary life and legacy of J. Mason Davis, an Alabama icon and a national treasure.

Demopolis, AL — Today, in observance of National Public Health Week, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) convened a Rural Health Roundtable at Whitfield Regional Hospital in Demopolis, bringing together hospital administrators, clinicians, and health system leaders from across Alabama's 7th Congressional District to discuss the mounting pressures facing rural health care providers—pressures intensified by recent federal cuts to key health care programs.

Additional photos and videos are available here.

Among those in attendance were Whitfield Regional Hospital CEO Doug Brewer, Greene County Health System CEO Rodgerick Williams, J. Paul Jones Rural Emergency Hospital CEO Jessica McGraw, Hill Hospital Rural Health Clinic Manager Darla Spencer, Grove Hill Hospital CEO Allen Jordan, DCH Health System CEO Katrina Keefer, Hale County Hospital CEO Shay Cherry, and Rural Health Medical Program CEO Keshee Dozier-Smith.

The discussion underscored the growing strain on rural hospitals, many of which are operating on razor-thin margins while serving aging populations, large geographic areas, and communities with limited access to specialty care. Participants detailed challenges ranging from workforce shortages and rising operating costs to the threat of service reductions or closures if federal support continues to erode.

“Rural hospitals are on the front lines in caring for our most vulnerable Alabamians,” said Rep. Sewell. “When federal funding is cut, it’s not just numbers on a spreadsheet. It’s maternity wards closing, emergency rooms understaffed, and families forced to drive hours for basic care. I’m fighting to make sure our rural providers have the resources they need to stay open and serve every patient who walks through their doors.”

During the roundtable, Rep. Sewell highlighted two pieces of legislation she is leading to strengthen rural health care infrastructure and expand access to care:

The Save Struggling Hospitals Act would fix Medicare payment formulas that do not account for the cost pressures facing hospitals in rural and lower-wage areas.

The Maternal Vaccination Act would protect the health of mothers and babies by increasing maternal and childhood vaccination rates.

On Wednesday morning, Sewell also visited DaVita Kidney Care in Demopolis where she spoke with patients and providers about the importance of preserving the accessibility of dialysis services in rural Alabama.

Sewell will continue working with local providers, state partners, and national rural health organizations to advance solutions that protect access to care for rural families.
