Rep. Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) Calls on the President to End Baseless Claims on Voter Fraud and instead Focus on Voter Suppression
January 28, 2017
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) issues the following statement calling on the President to end his baseless claims on voter fraud and instead focus on voter suppression during the 2016 elections:
“Largescale voter fraud is a baseless myth that has been disproven numerous times. The President’s obsession with voter fraud is just a senseless distraction from the real issue of voter suppression in this nation,” states Representative Sewell. “There is quantifiable evidence that voter fraud is so rare it never influences the outcome of any major U.S. election. We also know for a fact, through recent court decisions in North Carolina and Texas, that voter ID laws are a form of voter suppression that poses a real and pervasive threat to our democracy.
"Instead of investigating these baseless claims of voter fraud, our taxpayer dollars would be better spent looking into how millions of Americans, including 250,000 Alabamians, who don't have voter ID, could not vote in the 2016 election.
“The solution to the voting issue is a simple one. We can strengthen our democracy by making it easier, not harder, to vote. We should work in a bi-partisan way, as has been our history, to restore the full protections of Voting Rights Act of 1965.”
