Sewell Votes for H.R. 1, The For The People Act
March 7, 2019
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House of Representatives today passed H.R. 1, The For the People Act, a historic reform package aimed at restoring the promise of our nation’s democracy, end the culture of corruption in Washington and reduce the role of money in politics to return the power back to the American people.
“It has long been said that sunshine is the greatest disinfectant. I am proud that we voted today to limit the influence of money in our politics, make critical updates our campaign finance laws and help ensure that voters elect their representatives and not the other way around,” U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) said. “Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy. H.R. 1 expands access at the ballot box by addressing systemic and institutional barriers to voting, prohibits voter roll purges, ends partisan gerrymandering and protects our elections systems from attack.”
“This legislation will help give every American a seat at the table, so we can drive progress for every family in every community,” Sewell said. “I am also proud that H.R. 1 lays the groundwork for H.R. 4, The Voting Rights Advancement Act, which will restore the preclearance provision in the Voting Rights Act of 1965.”
