Press Releases

WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-7) released the following statement today in recognition of Dr.   Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  His birthday is January 15, and the holiday will be observed on Monday, January 17.

"Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the many sacrifices he made to pave the way for future generations.  As a result of Dr. King's vision, barriers were broken and opportunities have been created.  It was his courage that forged the path for me to be elected Alabama's first African American Congresswoman, and for that I am eternally grateful. In the 7th Congressional District of Alabama, we are especially aware of the significance of this day. We live surrounded by reminders of the sacrifices of the many brave women and men who fought for equal rights in an effort to fulfill the great promise of our nation - true and full democracy. We should all commemorate this holiday by recommitting our efforts to public service.  When our communities unite, our families are strengthened, economic opportunities are created and our children are better prepared for the future. Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. this day is celebrating the best of America."
