Washington, DC—Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) issued the following statement in recognition of Veterans Day.  The holiday will be observed on Friday, November 11.

“Today, we honor the commitment, sacrifice and service of our veterans who risked their lives to protect America and the freedoms we cherish. We owe our country’s safety and its liberties to their courage.  As we remember our veterans, we also honor the brave men and women who are currently serving in our armed forces. Our thoughts and prayers are with those left behind by our soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country by giving their lives in the line of duty.

On this Veterans Day, let us recommit ourselves to honoring the memory and service of America’s veterans.  Truly honoring those who've served and are currently serving is about more than just words.  It's about how we honor the men and women who gave their lives to defend our freedom and how we treat our service members and veterans every single day of the year. We must make sure that our veterans and our service members have the care they need and the benefits that they've earned when they come home. It's about serving them as well as they’ve served the United States of America.

As many of us spend this Veterans Day weekend with our families and loved ones, let us not forget what this time is truly about, paying special tribute to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much to protect and preserve our safety and security.  Let us never forget that we have the precious gift of freedom because of the dedication and courage of those who serve and have served.”
