WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-07), along with Congresswoman Martha Roby (AL-02), introduced a bi-partisan House resolution today commemorating the historic Selma to Montgomery marches of 1965. The resolution directs the Office of the Historian of the United States House of Representatives to compile oral histories from current and former Members of Congress involved in the historic Selma to Montgomery marches as well as the Civil Rights movement. These documents will be used for the purposes of expanding and augmenting the historic record for public dissemination and education.

 “As a Selma, Alabama native, I am proud and humbled to introduce this bi-partisan congressional resolution acknowledging the historical significance of the Selma to Montgomery marches, which led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965,” said Rep. Sewell. “This resolution ensures the preservation of the historical recollections of countless freedom fighters who served as members of Congress, such as my esteemed colleague Rep. John Lewis. I look forward to the passage of this monumental resolution.”

The resolution H.CON.RES. 562, is expected to be considered before the entire House of Representatives Thursday, March 1, 2012.
