Washington, D.C. – Today, Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Devin Nunes, announced that he would step aside from the Committee’s investigation into Russian election interference. Chairman Nunes’ recusal follows a series of ethics complaints filed against the Chairman for discussing classified material with the Trump Administration.

Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) releases the following statement:

“As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I believe that Chairman Nunes’ recusal is in the best interest of our Committee’s investigation,” said Rep. Sewell. “I hope that today’s announcement allows our committee to move forward with its inquiry into Russia’s attack on our democracy.”

“After weeks of canceled hearings and political distractions, it’s time for our Committee to roll up its sleeves and get back to work. We know that Russia interfered in our elections, we know they will attack again unless we are prepared, and our job in the House Intelligence Committee is to get all the facts on how they coordinated the attack, who was involved, and how we can prevent this from reoccurring. Nothing more fundamental could be at stake than the integrity of our democracy.”
