Rep. Sewell Statement on Alabama Supreme Court Ruling Affecting Fertility Treatments
February 23, 2024
Birmingham, AL — Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement on the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling affecting fertility treatments including in vitro fertilization (IVF):
“Since the Supreme Court’s devastating decision overturning Roe v. Wade, we have seen States across the nation work overtime to restrict a woman’s freedom to make her own personal health care decisions, and nowhere is that more apparent than here in Alabama.
“This latest decision by the Alabama Supreme Court is alarming and unacceptable. We are already seeing its chilling effects as clinics and hospital systems cut off fertility treatments like IVF for families who are simply trying to have children.
“It is unthinkable that in the year 2024 we would be fighting this battle. Yet everywhere we look, old battles have become new again as extremists work to roll back our hard-fought rights and freedoms. Congress must act to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade in federal law and ensure the reproductive freedom of women everywhere.”
