Congresswoman Terri Sewell responds to the Orlando Nightclub Shooting of June 12, 2016
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Terri Sewell comments on the tragic loss of life from the mass shooting in Orlando, FL. On June 12, 2016.
“I offer my deepest condolences to the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting, their families and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by this tragic act of terror and hatred. It is times like these when we must remember that when one community suffers, we all suffer. This act of terror and hatred against the LGBT community is the deadliest mass shooting in American history.
“As a Member of the Intelligence Committee, our nation’s security is paramount to me and these types of incidents remind me that we must remain diligent in protecting Americans from threats and attacks both domestic and abroad. The senseless murder of innocent people is a too common occurrence in this country. This is a problem that has touched thousands of people and families all over this country. Collectively, we must be proactive in preventing as many of these incidents as possible in the future.
“While our hearts are lifted by the powerful outpouring of selfless acts of bravery and public support, we must ask ourselves if we have done all we can to prevent such tragedy. Congress needs to work together to protect our homeland against these mass killings. This approach must include commonsense gun safety reform. While I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, I believe that strengthening background checks, eliminating gun show loopholes, and preventing terrorist from acquiring assault weapons will not limit the rights of lawful gun owners to protect and defend themselves. We need real leadership. We cannot continue to mourn these tragedies without doing all we can to prevent them.”
