Washington, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement on the third anniversary of the Affordable Care Act:

“Today marks the third anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act, a critically important piece of legislation which has already helped millions of Americans and Alabamians gain access to quality and affordable healthcare. Because of the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies can no longer impose lifetime limits on coverage, discriminate against children with pre-existing conditions or drop coverage when a customer gets sick.

We have already seen the benefits of the healthcare law across this nation and the 7th Congressional District of Alabama. In Alabama alone- 1.5 million people, including 609,000 women and 396,000 children, no longer have to worry about lifetime limits on coverage; 49,000 young people are now covered under their parents insurance until the age of 26; and 48,264 Alabamians on Medicare saved on prescriptions drugs last year because the ‘donut hole’ was closed.

The Affordable Care Act has put Americans back in charge of their healthcare and gives millions of families better access to healthcare benefits and protections, which are so critical to the welfare of the people of the 7th Congressional District, the state of Alabama and this nation. As a Member of Congress, I remain committed to protecting the significant strides we have made and ensuring all Americans can receive the quality and affordable healthcare they deserve.
