Washington, D.C. – On Thursday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the investigation of Russian election interference. Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) releases the following statement:

“It is imperative that we hold a full and fair investigation into Russian election interference and ties between Russian officials and the Trump campaign. Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the investigation is a big step towards that goal,” said Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell. “So far, the work of the House Committee on Intelligence has been frustrated by the FBI’s unwillingness to answer numerous questions related to our congressional inquiry. I welcome and expect the Department of Justice’s full cooperation in getting to the bottom of Russian interference in our elections. There is too much at stake on this issue to play politics.”

Rep. Sewell has cosponsored the Protecting Our Democracy Act. This legislation would create a 12-member, bipartisan, independent commission empowered to interview witnesses, obtain documents, issue subpoenas, and receive public testimony to examine attempts by the Russian government and others to use electronic means to influence, interfere with, or sow distrust in this year’s U.S. elections.

Rep. Sewell is a Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, which announced the scope of its congressional investigation into Russian election interference on Weds., March 1.
