Press Releases

Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement on the Fourth of July:

"As Americans across this nation and world pause to celebrate Independence Day, let us reflect upon our Founding Fathers who established our country’s democratic values of freedom, liberty and justice in the Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution.  On this day, we should pay special tribute to our Nation’s service men and women who served this country honorably and those who continue to protect our freedoms at home and abroad. I am especially grateful for our very own Tuskegee Airmen and Montford Point Marines who were the first black servicemen who courageously fought in World War II so that this country could live up to its creed of equality for all.  The freedoms that we have should be cherished and appreciated each day.

As we celebrate our nation's independence, let us also remember the foot soldiers – those who marched bled and died to protect our civil rights. Now as the fundamental right to vote is under attack by the recent Supreme Court decision, we must never take for granted the critical values that make our democracy work.

May God continue to bless our military, our families and these United States."
