Statement from Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell on FEMA's Denial of Alabama's Request for Emergency Public Assistance
February 23, 2012
Washington, DC—Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) issued the following statement after being notified that Alabama’s request for emergency public assistance for Jefferson, Perry and Chilton counties was denied by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The federal disaster declaration request for public assistance was made on Feb 7, 2012 by Governor Bentley, following the devastating storms and tornadoes that ripped through the state several weeks ago.
“I am disappointed to learn of FEMA’s decision to deny the State of Alabama’s request for public assistance and direct federal assistance for Jefferson, Perry and Chilton counties. It was my sincere hope that FEMA would have granted the State of Alabama’s request for public assistance to aid our state in its recovery efforts. Following the tornadoes in January, we once again witnessed tremendous coordination between agencies and officials at the local, state and federal level. In spite of FEMA’s denial, I am committed to continuing to work with local, state and federal agencies to ensure that every affected community receives the necessary support and resources it needs to rebuild.”
