Birmingham, Alabama – This evening, President Obama issued a major disaster declaration in the State of Alabama triggering immediate federal assistance for the people and communities affected by this week’s storms and tornadoes. On Wednesday, Congresswoman Sewell joined the Alabama delegation in sending a letter to President Obama urging him to declare a major disaster in the State of Alabama. She also joined the delegation in requesting individual assistance for families in certain counties that experienced property damage and/or loss.

“I am pleased that President Obama honored our request to declare a major disaster in the State of Alabama. I am also pleased that those families that experienced property damage or loss in Jefferson County will be eligible to apply for individual assistance from FEMA,” said Rep. Sewell. “Today, I took a tour through Bessemer with several state and local officials. It gave me the opportunity to witness firsthand the devastation which better helped me advocate for the declaration.”
