Washington, DC—Today, Rep. Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) released the following statement after voting against H.R. 3630:

“Today, I voted against H.R. 3630, a bill that would make drastic and harmful changes to the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program. The bill would make significant cuts to Medicare that would hurt our nation’s seniors. This bill also contains political and controversial language that should be discussed and debated in separate legislation.

Before Congress breaks for the year, we need to pass a bill that solely focuses on extending relief to unemployed workers and middle class Americans who are still suffering in this recovering economy. This is no time to play with the livelihood of millions of Americans.

Our voters sent us here to make their lives better, not more difficult.  We were sent here to help create jobs, stimulate the economy and protect our most vulnerable.  Accomplishing these goals require a willing and compromising spirit.  The folks of the 7th district of Alabama want me to put people before politics and do what is in their best interest not partisan interest. The American people expect and deserve nothing less from us! We cannot go home for the holidays until we ensure that the blessings of this holiday season can be enjoyed by all.

I look forward to voting in favor of a clean bill that extends relief to unemployed workers and payroll tax cuts to middle class families.”
