Washington, DC—Today, Congresswoman Sewell issued the following statement after the Jefferson County Commission voted to file for Chapter Nine Bankruptcy:

“Today, the Jefferson County Commission voted collectively to come to a resolution so that Jefferson County can move forward from this difficult situation. There are no easy solutions to the dire sewer debt crisis and the Jefferson County Commission was faced with a very tough decision. Like many, I had hoped that this situation would not result in a default. Our concern must be for the effect on the people we represent. I know that the Jefferson County Commission came to the decision they believe is in the best interests of Jefferson County. In these trying economic times, cities and counties in the State of Alabama and across this nation are feeling the economic pain. Many have been forced to rethink and reevaluate their financial priorities and fiscal obligations. I believe that by working together Jefferson County will emerge from this challenge stronger and more economically viable. As a Member of Congress and Representative of the 7th Congressional District which includes Jefferson County, I will continue to work hard every day to strengthen economic development and promote policies that will help local governments, businesses and families succeed.”
