Washington, D.C. –Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-7) released the following statement in recognition of Black History Month:

“This month, we pause to remember and honor the sacrifices that freedom fighters made in the name of fairness and dignity for all races.  The story of the 7th District and the State of Alabama cannot be told without remembering the many African Americans that sought to make our state a place free from racism and hatred.  We should all carry their lessons of bravery, inspiration, and fortitude with us.

We also pause to remember the efforts of African American creators and innovators whose many contributions helped shape modern society.  This is a time to reflect on how far we have come as a nation, and to celebrate this progress as a victory for all Americans.  The historic election of our nation’s first African American president and the rise of individuals from all walks of life to the top of politics and business demonstrates how far we have come.  I know I stand on the shoulders of the giants who came before me.  It was their courage that forged the path for me to be elected Alabama’s first African American Congresswoman, and for that I am eternally grateful.

We should all commemorate this month by recognizing the dream that civil rights activists had for our country, and work to bridge barriers and create solutions to social problems.   Together, we can strengthen and uplift our communities to build a brighter future and move the 7th District, the State of Alabama and this country forward.”
