Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell Sworn in to the 112th Congress

Makes History, Becoming the First African American Woman to Represent Alabama in Congress

WASHINTGON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) was sworn in to the 112th Congress on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives becoming the first African American woman to represent Alabama in Congress. Immediately following the swearing in ceremony, Congresswoman Sewell cast her first votes as a member of Congress. The seventh congressional district includes parts of the cities of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, as well as the counties of Alabama’s Black Belt - - the heart of which is Congresswoman Sewell’s hometown of Selma.

“I am excited and honored to have the opportunity to serve the seventh congressional district of Alabama, which includes my hometown of Selma”, stated Congresswoman Sewell.  “This opportunity to advocate on behalf of my home district is a privilege and I will take my responsibilities as a Member of Congress very seriously. I stand on the shoulders of the many women and men who have worked tirelessly to break barriers for women and minorities like those who marched in my hometown of Selma for justice and equality.  I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and working to create jobs, improve our infrastructure and strengthen our public education system.”
