Washington, D.C. -- Congresswoman Terri Sewell has been named as the Ranking Member on a key subcommittee on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence during her second term on the Committee.
She is now the leading Democrat on the Subcommittee on the Department of Defense Intelligence and Overhead Architecture. The Subcommittee on the Department of Defense Intelligence and Overhead Architecture has the duty to oversee policies, programs, and budgets for Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) as well as the intelligence funding for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.
“I am proud that my colleagues selected me as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Defense Intelligence and Overhead Architecture. Alabama plays a critically important role in providing the advanced technology necessary for our military and intelligence agencies to effectively execute their missions. The Subcommittee on the Department of Defense Intelligence and Overhead Architecture is responsible for congressional oversight of policies, programs and budgets for several government agencies that are integral in defending our country against terrorism and collecting vital intelligence. As this Subcommittee’s Ranking Member, I am committed to working with Congress and the Administration in supporting polices and legislation that ensures the safety of all Americans,” said Congresswoman Sewell.
“The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence has a strong tradition of bipartisanship, and I intend to continue that tradition. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in shaping policies that help preserve our national security,” added the Congresswoman.
“In order to improve oversight of our nation’s intelligence community, the Committee is adopting a new agency-specific subcommittee structure. I know that the new Ranking Members – including Representative Terri Sewell – of these subcommittees together with their respective Members will work closely with their Republican counterparts to continue the strong bipartisan tradition of this committee, and maximize the scrutiny we are able to give these large agencies. There’s no shortage of issues that will come before Congress this session – from addressing new threats of terrorism at home and around the world, to reforming our surveillance capabilities and oversight, as well as securing and reinforcing our nation’s cybersecurity – and I look forward to working with Chairman Nunes and our colleagues to do everything possible to preserve both our security and privacy,” said Congressman Adam Schiff, the Ranking Member for the House Permanent Select Committee.
