Dear Christopher,

May was a busy month for Team Sewell. We fought back against President Trump's billionaire boondoggle bill, stood up for affordable health care, introduced new legislation, and met with constituents all across our district.

Meanwhile, we remained laser-focused on serving you and your families.

Keep reading to hear about the progress we've made on your behalf.

Sincerely,

FIGHTING BACK AGAINST TRUMP'S BILLIONAIRE BOONDOGGLE BILL

This month, House Republicans doubled down on their betrayal of working families by passing Trump's big billionaire boondoggle bill.

It gives trillions of dollars in tax cuts to the wealthy and pays for them by kicking 14 million Americans off their health care and 16 million children off food assistance. It cuts Medicaid by $700+ billion, SNAP by almost $300 billion, and funnels billions into a private school voucher scheme at the expense of our public schools.

House Democrats fought like hell to stop this bill. During debate in the Ways and Means Committee, I stayed up all night to vote against it. Watch my opening statement here.

When the bill was considered by the Rules Committee, I put forward two amendments to expand access to health care and protect funding for our public schools. Sadly, Republicans rejected them both.

I also signed a discharge petition to protect Medicaid and SNAP from draconian cuts.

When Speaker Johnson tried to force through the bill in the dead of night, I voted HELL NO.

As the bill heads to the Senate, I will continue to stand up and speak out against it. We can't sit by and let Trump and his allies put the interests of the 1% over the needs of hardworking Alabamians.

SAVING OUR HEALTH CARE

https://sewell.house.gov/index.cfm?a=Files.Serve&File_id=77BBEEAA-6373-47AD-8B51-E181320060C6

In May, I brought together patients, providers, and advocates for a "Save Our Health Care" Roundtable in Birmingham.

Our guests shared powerful testimony about the harm that will be inflicted by Republicans’ cuts to Medicaid, cancer research, AIDS funding, and more.

Among the participants was Ms. LaToya Mims, whose beautiful 6 year-old daughter Harper lives with cerebral palsy. It is because of Medicaid that Harper can live at home, surrounded by her loved ones.

Harper's story is a powerful reminder of who will be hit hardest by health care cuts—children and people with disabilities.

Watch my video with LaToya and Harper here.

As elected officials, we should we working expand access to health care instead of ripping it away from those in need. That's why on May 8, I introduced the Bridge to Medicaid Act with Congressman Shomari Figures.

Our bill would provide health insurance coverage to the 100,000+ Alabamians caught in the Medicaid coverage gap.

It would help thousands of Alabamians see a doctor, obtain medications, and afford life-saving care.

Despite being blocked by House Republicans, we will keep working to get this bill across the finish line.

CONNECTING WITH CONSTITUENTS

https://sewell.house.gov/index.cfm?a=Files.Serve&File_id=4825D8A3-EB1B-4E49-BD65-7CAFA4AA1864

In May, we continued our annual Congress in Your Community Tour through all 13 counties in Alabama's 7th Congressional District.

Throughout the month, we brought our mobile office to Jefferson County, Perry County, and Wilcox County to assist constituents with their federal needs. If you need help with a federal agency, visit my website here or reach out to one of our district offices.

Representatives from my team also attended Senior Citizens Day in Lowndes County and the events celebrating Hyundai's 20 years of manufacturing in Montgomery, Alabama.

And finally, on May 28, I stopped by the A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club in Birmingham to speak with our young people about the importance of public service and civic engagement!

Stay tuned—We look forward to visiting a city near you!

CONGRATULATIONS TO MISS VICTORIA HARDIN!

Congratulations to Miss Victoria Hardin, a 9th grader at Hillcrest High School, for winning first place in our 2025 Congressional Art Competition!

Her piece, entitled Bama Beams Ahead, perfectly captures this year's theme: "Picturing a Future for our Historic District."

As our first-place winner, Victoria will receive a free trip to Washington D.C. to attend a reception along with winners from across the nation. Her artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

This year, we received a total of 45 amazing submissions from high school students across our district. Once again, I was completely blown away by the talent and creativity on display.

Congratulations to Victoria and everyone who participated. We in AL-07 are blessed to have so many outstanding young artists!
