More than 50 years after Jimmie Lee Jackson was shot and killed in Marion in an incident that helped spark the Selma to Montgomery marches, the city's importance to the civil rights movement was recognized on Monday when Marion was added to the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail.

Jackson, a Marion resident, was killed during a protest to free Southern Christian Leadership Conference member the Rev. James Orange at the Perry County Jail. Martin Luther King was the first president of the SCLC.
