The NAACP's Alabama State Conference is preparing for this weekend's summit and rally titled "Restore Our Voting Rights" happening in Shelby County.

The gathering that happens from Friday through Sunday will address ongoing concerns by the organization and others stemming from the U.S. Supreme Court's 2013 decision to eliminate certain protections in the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

"The purpose is to allow the country to have a voice on why and what we lost when we lost part of the Voting Rights Act and make them aware what was gained 50 years ago on the Edmund Pettus Bridge (in Selma) and what has been taken away from us 50 years later," said the Rev. Kenneth Dukes, president of the NAACP's Shelby County chapter.
