AL.com: #ShameOnAL: Sewell, Congressional Black Caucus members use hashtag to denounce DL office decision
U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Birmingham, and other members of the Congressional Black Caucus are using the hashtag #ShameonAL on Twitter on Wednesday to describe the state's decision to close driver's license satellite offices in the state that disproportionately affect African Americans, the poor and the elderly.
Sewell, the lone Democrat in Alabama's congressional delegation, has called on the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the decision, claiming it disenfranchises those groups' voting rights because a driver's license is one of the acceptable forms of ID needed to cast ballots in the Yellowhammer state. She previously told AL.com that the closures, which were made to fix the state's budget woes, "doesn't pass the smell test."
