Washington, DC — Today, Congresswoman Sewell was delighted to hear that a young budding chef from the 7th Congressional District, ten year old Kindall Murphy, will represent the State of Alabama at the second The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge & Kids’ “State Dinner.” The dinner is hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama and will take place at the White House on July 8th.

“I am thrilled that Selma native Kindall Murphy’s recipe — a kale, broccoli, chicken and apple salad — was selected as the winner for the State of Alabama in the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge. We are so proud to have her represent our great state at the White House on July 8th. At such a young age, Kindall is already a testament to the importance of eating healthy and exercising regularly. It is so critically important that we promote a healthier next generation of Americans and I applaud First Lady Obama’s efforts to ensure that our kids make healthier choices,” said Rep. Sewell.

“It is such an honor to be chosen and to represent my state at the White House. I love eating healthy and exercising with my brothers. And I just cannot wait to meet First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House,” said Kindall Murphy, ten year old winner of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge from Cedar Park Elementary in Selma, Alabama.

“I am so overjoyed by Kindall’s selection because she is a delightful young girl and represents all that is great about Cedar Park Elementary. She is a prime example of what exposure in education can provide and I know she has a bright future ahead of her,” said Bertram Pickney, principal of Cedar Park Elementary.

This is the second year the First Lady has hosted a recipe challenge to promote healthy eating nationwide. The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge & Kids’ State Dinner invited parents or guardians and their children, ages 8-12, to create and submit an original lunch recipe that is healthy, affordable, and tasty. One winner was selected from all 50 states, plus the U.S. Territories, D.C. and Puerto Rico and was flown to the nation’s capital for the Kids’ “State Dinner at the White House hosted by First Lady Obama. A selection of the winning healthy recipes will be served at the dinner.
