Congresswoman Sewell was delighted to welcome Selma native Kindall Murphy, winner of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, to Washington D.C. Today, Kindall represented the State of Alabama at the First Lady’s Kids’ State Dinner at the White House.   To win the competition, Kindall created an inventive salad recipe- a kale, broccoli, chicken and apple salad- which was included in the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge Cookbook.

“I was honored to welcome Kindall Murphy and her mother Mrs. Toby Murphy to the U.S. Capitol.  Kindall has the unique opportunity to represent Alabama at the Kids’ State Dinner at the White House and spend time with First Lady Michelle Obama. Kindall represents the very best that our state and the 7th Congressional District has to offer and I am sure she will continue to make us proud. She is a bright, energetic young lady with a terrific future ahead of her.” said Rep. Sewell.

“I had a wonderful time at the White House today. I got to sit at the same table and eat with Mrs. Obama. I got to ask her questions and have a conversation with her. President Obama came to our table, shook my hand, and asked me about my recipe.” said Kindall. Her mother, Mrs. Toby Murphy added, “The First Lady was so pleasant, welcoming, and down-to-earth that I forgot I was talking to Michelle Obama. I felt like I was talking to a friend.”

“I hope that Kindall’s influence resonates with every young person across the State of Alabama to practice healthy lifestyle habits. The First Lady’s initiative to combat obesity and encourage healthy lifestyles is truly inspiring.” said Rep. Terri Sewell.

This is the second year the First Lady has hosted a recipe challenge to promote healthy eating nationwide. The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge & Kids’ State Dinner invited parents or guardians and their children, ages 8-12, to create and submit an original lunch recipe that is healthy, affordable, and tasty. One winner was selected from all 50 states, plus the U.S. Territories, D.C. and Puerto Rico and was flown to the nation’s capital for the Kids’ State Dinner at the White House hosted by First Lady Obama. A selection of the winning healthy recipes will be served at the dinner.
