Washington DC – Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-07) issued the following statement on the passing of distinguished educator and advocate for children, Dr. Ethel Hall:

“We mourn the loss of Dr. Ethel Hall, one of Alabama’s premiere educators and one of our Nation’s strongest advocates for children.  As the first African American elected to Alabama State Board of Education, Dr. Hall was a true pioneer, who sowed seeds for the opportunities that now flourish for so many.  She was a personal mentor and an inspiration to my life and I am deeply saddened by her passing.

Throughout her life, Dr. Hall was the epitome of a servant leader.  She led by example and was motivated by a driving passion that all children deserve a quality education.  During her twenty-four year tenure on the Alabama State Board of Education, Dr. Hall faced tough decisions regarding a myriad of education issues, but in those decisions she always remained a person of principle—putting Alabama’s children first.

I know that my generation stands on the shoulders of trail blazers like Dr. Hall.  It was her light that guided the path that led me to become Alabama’s first African American Congresswoman and for that, I am eternally grateful.  Dr. Hall’s life stands as a testament to the courage and strength of one’s ability to shape the live of many.  We should be renewed by her love of learning and recommit ourselves to providing our Nation’s greatest asset—its children—with the resources and opportunities they need to compete in this global economy.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this difficult time.”
