WASHINGTON DC – Tomorrow, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-7) will attend the National Prayer Breakfast at the Washington Hilton Hotel with two faith-based leaders from the 7th Congressional District.  The Prayer Breakfast is held annually, and provides an opportunity for political, community, faith-based and business leaders from all over the world to come together to pray and reflect upon issues facing the nation and the world.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to attend the National Prayer Breakfast with two faith-based leaders from my district,” said Rep. Sewell.  “Now more than ever, we need to unite and address some of the most pressing issues facing our country and our world.  Dr. King once wrote, ‘We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.’  What happens to one of us happens to all of us, and we must work together to bridge barriers and create solutions to many of the challenges that we are facing.  I look forward to praying with my colleagues and renewing my commitment to strengthening our families, creating economic opportunities for our communities, preparing our children for the future and spreading democracy and the universal rights that all people deserve all around the world.”

Accompanying Rep. Sewell to the breakfast will be two faith-based leaders from the 7th Congressional District:

• Reverend Dr. Vernon Swift – First Vice President and President of the Alabama State  Missionary Baptist Convention and Pastor at Elizabeth Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, AL;
• Reverend T.L. Lewis – Pastor at Bethel Baptist Church, Birmingham, AL.

“I feel honored to come and represent the State Convention of Alabama in Washington, and am excited to come together as a nation and pray,” said Rev. Dr. Vernon Swift.  “I know this will be an uplifting and unifying event— two parties putting aside their differences and working together.  Our country was founded on prayer, and together we need to go back there.”

“Coming to this breakfast is truly a dream come true, because this is not only a unifying event; it is a historical one as well,” said Rev. T.L. Lewis. “I am honored and humbled to be invited to see the first African American president our nation has ever had by the first African American Congresswoman from my District and the State of Alabama. I have been a pastor in Alabama for more than 40 years, and never in my life did I think I would see this.  It truly shows how far we have come, and what progress we have made as a nation.”

The National Prayer Breakfast is a bi-partisan event held in Washington, DC, on the first Thursday of February each year.  The breakfast, held in the Hilton Hotel’s International Ballroom, is attended by some 3,500 guests, including international invitees from over 100 countries.  It is hosted by members of the United States Congress and is organized on their behalf by The Fellowship Foundation, a Christian organization.
