WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-7) announced that $5,239,571 was awarded to the Birmingham Airport Authority to update and renovate the facilities at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.  The U.S. Department of Transportation funds were awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration.

“This funding will improve the current facilities and enhance safety at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, which will and allow them to manage more traffic, improve travel for passengers and attract new businesses” said Rep. Sewell.  “When new businesses are attracted and more passengers can be transported, jobs are created and more goods are shipped across the country.  These are the types of funding opportunities that will make the State of Alabama and the 7th Congressional District stronger.”

“We have been very fortunate to continue to secure funding for the purpose of undertaking development projects such as the Terminal Modernization Project (TMP),” said Al Denson, President and CEO of the Birmingham Airport Authority. “The funding will enable the Birmingham Airport Authority to upgrade the aging airport infrastructure which is part of our strategic plan to grow the state’s largest airport. According to the Birmingham Airport Authority, this grant will fund the airfield improvement portion of the larger Terminal Modernization Project currently underway at the airport. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is a small-hub primary airport associated with Birmingham, Alabama.
