Press Releases

WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-7) released the following statement today in recognition of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  His birthday is January 15, and the holiday will be observed on Monday, January 16.

“Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man who inspired our nation to unite around the common goals of love, dignity, peace and justice. The story of the 7th Congressional District and the State of Alabama cannot be told without remembering the many sacrifices of Dr. King and civil rights leaders such as Alabama’s own, the late Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth. We should carry their lessons of courage, inspiration and fortitude with us. It is important to remember Dr. King’s legacy was not just a part of black history, but integral to the very fabric of American history.

Dr. King challenged us to embrace our shared humanity through public service, civic engagement and volunteerism. As Dr. King once said: ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?’

Let us dedicate this MLK holiday to public service. In difficult times like these, volunteerism and civic engagement connect our communities and reaffirm the strength, humanity and determination of the American people.”
