Washington, DC- Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell was named to the powerful House Committee on Financial Services for the 113th Congress by House Democratic Leadership and her colleagues.

The House Financial Services Committee has jurisdiction over the financial services and housing sectors, including banking, securities, insurance, real estate, public and assisted housing.

“I am honored to be selected to serve on the Financial Services Committee.  I look forward to using my 15 years of experience as a finance attorney to promote economic development in my district, strengthen consumer protections and ensure adequate regulation within the banking industry.   My unique experiences working with Wall Street and Main Street have given me the ability to understand the impact that our policies have on the American people.  I look forward to taking an active role on the Committee,” said Rep. Sewell.

Congresswoman Sewell was a successful securities lawyer for more than a decade at the law firm of Davis, Polk & Wardwell in New York City. Prior to her election to Congress, she was a partner in the Birmingham law office of Maynard, Cooper & Gale, P.C. where she distinguished herself as one of the only black public finance lawyers in the State of Alabama.

Birmingham ranks as one of the most important business centers in the Southeastern United States and is also one of the largest banking centers in the United States.
