Statement by Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell Regarding Letter to U.S. Army Corps on Operation of Alabama River Locks
September 17, 2012
“I stand with my colleagues in the Alabama delegation in expressing significant concerns with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to implement operational changes at several Corps locks across the state. This decision by the Corps will likely have a negative impact on both commercial and recreational vessels’ ability to utilize and navigate the Alabama River as well as other waterways throughout the state.
While I understand and appreciate the challenging fiscal and budgetary climate that forces the U.S. Army Corps to make difficult decisions about how to prioritize their spending and allocation of resources; this decision has important safety and economic implications for my district and the state of Alabama that warrants further review and consideration. I am committed to continuing our work and efforts with the Administration and my colleagues in the House and Senate to develop a solution that takes into account the concerns of all stakeholders and interest groups."
