WASHINGTON, DC– Tomorrow, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) will be joined by Bessemer, AL native and Tuskegee Airmen honoree Mrs. Beatrice Price to attend President Obama’s State of the Union Address. For four years from 1944 to 1948, Mrs. Price was assigned to the Tuskegee Airmen as a nurse. For her exemplary courage and service to the Tuskegee Airmen unit, Mrs. Price was honored along with the Tuskegee Pilots and received a Congressional Gold Medal in 2007. Congresswoman Sewell presented the medal to Mrs. Price on September 16, 2012 at a special ceremony at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL.
"It is such a privilege to have Mrs. Beatrice Price, a distinguished Tuskegee Airmen honoree, join me in attending President Obama’s State of the Union address,” said Rep. Sewell. “Mrs. Price’s tireless service to our country and her commitment in caring for the Tuskegee Airmen in WWII was unparalleled. We are deeply indebted to service men and women like Mrs. Price who continue to answer the call to protect our freedoms and defend our democracy.”
“I am very excited to join Congresswoman Sewell in attending the State of the Union address tomorrow night,” said Mrs. Beatrice Price. “It is unreal that all of this is happening to me at this stage in my life and I am delighted and honored to have the opportunity.”
After her discharge in 1948, Mrs. Price served as a nurse in the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Birmingham, AL for more than 34 years before retiring in 1988.
