Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional.

"Today, the Supreme Court rightly stood up for equal protection by striking down the Defense of Marriage Act, affording the same federal rights for all married couples. Under this law, the federal government cannot discriminate against couples that states have deemed legally married.  As the member that represents the civil rights district of Alabama, we cannot support the denial of federal rights and the unequal treatment of any American."
