WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-7) announced that $175,000 has been awarded to the Montgomery Regional Airport for the rehabilitation of the primary runway’s safety area and the development of a year-long wildlife assessment. The U.S. Department of Transportation funds were awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Montgomery Regional Airport has been granted $175,500 to make improvements to the Runway 10/28 safety area and to conduct a Wildlife Hazard Assessment update.  The funding this grant provides is for the rehabilitation the primary runway safety area and for the development of a year-long wildlife assessment.

“This critical funding will provide funding to the Montgomery Regional Airport to improve both the environmental impact and runway safety concerns of the airport,” said Congresswoman Sewell. “These are the types of funding opportunities that will make the State of Alabama and the 7th Congressional District stronger by creating jobs and improving the quality of the Montgomery Regional Airport.”

“The announcement of an airport grant by way of the Airport Improvement Program for Montgomery Regional Airport is great news,” said Phil B. Perry, Executive Director of the Montgomery Airport Authority. “Both the design to rehabilitate the runway safety areas and the Wildlife study are being done for the sole purpose of enhancing safety.”

According to the Montgomery Airport Authority, the grant was intentionally kept smaller than most Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants because a portion of the funding is for the planning of a project which will take place in the future.
