Washington, D.C. – On Thursday night, the Senate voted down the latest version of Trumpcare, a health bill which would result in 16 million more uninsured Americans over the next decade.

Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) releases the following statement:

“As a representative of a district and state where providers and patients are heavily dependent on Medicaid, Medicare, and Affordable Care Act (ACA) cost sharing reductions and protections, I am relieved that efforts to roll back those protections remain unsuccessful,” said Rep. Sewell. “The partisan repeal effort in the Senate failed because Trumpcare would have eliminated coverage for millions of Americans and raised costs for many more. The Senators who put their constituents’ needs over politics last night by voting against the bill should be commended for their courage. Equally as inspiring are the constituents who have called, emailed, and visited their Members of Congress to speak out for the millions of Americans who would lose health coverage under Trumpcare. While I am grateful that the Senate’s ill-advised bill did not pass last night, we cannot forget that efforts to sabotage the ACA, repeal the protections of the ACA, and dismantle Medicaid and Medicare have not yet been defeated. We must remain vigilant in defending health care for all Americans.”

“Now we can start bipartisan efforts to fix the ACA. I am proud to support a five-point health care plan that would address some of the biggest challenges in our health care system with commonsense solutions, like protecting premium assistance, promoting continuous coverage, and protecting essential health benefits. It is time for Republican leaders to work with Democrats, patient groups, our health care providers, and the American people to draft a bill that stabilizes the individual market and increases affordable coverage options for all Americans.”
