Employers at the event include: Alabama Power Company, Honda, Protective Life Corps, Wells Fargo, University of Alabama, U.S. Military and many others. BACKGROUND: Like many areas across our nation, parts of the 7th Congressional District of Alabama continue to struggle with high unemployment. The unemployment rate in Sumter County, where this year’s Job Fair will be held, is 6.5 percent, more than two points above the national average.

In addition to hosting the annual Congressional Job Fair, Rep. Sewell founded Project R.E.A.D.Y., a workforce development initiative which offers training workshops conducted throughout the 7th congressional district by career professionals in partnership with educational institutions. On Monday, July 31, Rep. Sewell hosted a Project R.E.A.D.Y. workshop at Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa.

Since coming to Congress, Rep. Sewell has made job growth a top priority. In the House of Representatives, Rep. Sewell has introduced the Workforce Development Tax Credit Act (H.R. 1190), a bipartisan bill that prepares workers for manufacturing jobs by providing federal tax credits for businesses that offer apprenticeship programs and additional tax credits for companies that hire apprentices.
