Rep. Sewell Statement on House Republicans Sabotaging Bipartisan National Security Agreement
February 6, 2024
Washington D.C. — Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement on House Republicans’ actions sabotaging the national security agreement negotiated by the Biden Administration and a bipartisan group of Senate leaders:
“After months of serious, good-faith negotiations, leaders on both sides of the aisle put forward a strong, bipartisan agreement to secure our border, support the people of Israel and Ukraine, and supply much-needed humanitarian relief to civilians in Gaza. Sadly, rather than work with us to address these critical national security challenges, House Republican Leadership again showed they are more interested in playing political games than solving the crises around the world.
“While I fully support assistance for Israel, the standalone bill that House Republicans attempted to force through is a cynical effort to sabotage the deal reached by White House and Senate negotiators. It denies humanitarian relief to civilians in Gaza, fails to support the Ukrainian people in their fight to preserve their democracy, and just like their baseless impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas, it does nothing to secure our border.
“At a time of growing national security challenges, we need serious leaders in the House of Representative that are willing to put partisan politics aside and demonstrate American leadership. Our democratic allies in Israel and Ukraine deserve better."
