Washington D.C. – U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Elections, cosponsored a constitutional amendment, introduced by Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Jospeh Morelle (NY-25), that would reverse the Supreme Court’s decision to grant presidents immunity from criminal prosecution. Rep. Sewell spoke about the amendment at a press conference on Capitol Hill on Tuesday and emphasized the importance of ensuring that all people—even Presidents—are held accountable.

A recording is available here.

“No one better understands our nation’s founding ideals than the people of Alabama’s 7th Congressional District,” said Rep. Sewell. “After all, it was the people of our district who gave us the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. We understand the meaning of equality and justice for all. We understand the power of the vote. And we understand that in America, no one is above the law.”

“When Donald Trump’s hand-picked Supreme Court justices made presidents immune from criminal prosecution, they dealt a devastating blow to our democracy,” continued Sewell. “Now more than ever, we must take action to correct this injustice and restore the ideals upon which our nation was founded. In this great country, we are not ruled by a king. We are governed by a president. Just like every American, that president has an obligation to follow our laws or face the consequences.”

The Presidential Accountability Amendment is cosponsored by over 60% of the House Democratic Caucus, including Representatives Adams, Amo, Ansari, Balint, Barragán, Beatty, Bell, Bonamici, Boyle, Brown, Brownley, Budzinski, Carson, Carter, Casar, Casten, Castor, Castro, Cherfilus-McCormick, Chu, Clarke, Cleaver, Clyburn, Cohen, Costa, Courtney, Craig, Crockett, Davis (IL), Dean, DeGette, DeLauro, DelBene, Deluzio, DeSaulnier, Dexter, Dingell, Doggett, Escobar, Espaillat, Evans, Fletcher, Foster, Friedman, Frost, Garamendi, Garcia (CA), Goldman, Gomez, Green, Horsford, Houlahan, Huffman, Jayapal, Johnson (GA), Johnson (TX), Kamlager-Dove, Kelly, Kennedy, Khanna, Krishnamoorthi, Landsman, Larson, Latimer, Lee (PA), Leger Fernández, Levin, Lieu, Lofgren, Lynch, Mannion, Matsui, McBride, McClain Delaney, McClellan, McCollum, McGarvey, McGovern, McIver, Meeks, Meng, Mfume, Moore, Mrvan, Mullin, Nadler, Neal, Neguse, Norcross, Norton, Olszewski, Omar, Pallone, Panetta, Peters, Pingree, Pocan, Pressley, Quigley, Ramirez, Raskin, Rivas, Ruiz, Salinas, Sánchez, Scanlon, Schakowsky, Schneider, Schrier, Scott (GA), Sherman, Sherrill, Simon, Smith, Stansbury, Stanton, Stevens, Strickland, Subramanyam, Swalwell, Thanedar, Thompson (MS), Thompson (CA), Titus, Tlaib, Tokuda, Tonko, Torres (CA), Trahan, Underwood, Vargas, Veasey, Velázquez, Wasserman Schultz, Watson Coleman, Williams, and Wilson.
