Birmingham, AL — Today, during House Democrats’ Cost of Living Week of Action, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) shared a video on social media highlighting the higher prices Alabamians are facing at the grocery store. Despite President Trump’s promise to “lower costs on day one,” families are facing higher food costs, utility costs, health care costs, and housing costs. Meanwhile, roughly 378,000 Alabama families are poised to see their food assistance cut or eliminated as a result of President Trump’s Big Ugly Bill, and more than 190,000 Alabamians are expected to lose their health care coverage.

According to the global marketing research firm NIQ, as of the beginning of August 2025, egg prices rose 15%, beef prices rose 10%, orange juice prices rose 15%, and bacon prices rose 6% compared to the price of the same items one year ago.

Rep. Sewell’s video follows the release of a report by Groundwork Collaborative detailing the ways in which Republicans’ billionaires-first economic agenda and sweeping tariffs are making life more expensive for families. The report finds that, “from health care to groceries to housing and energy, the GOP’s draconian economic policymaking will force U.S. families to shell out thousands of dollars more each year to pay for daily necessities.”
