Washington D.C. — Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement on the announcement by Leader Steny Hoyer that he will not seek reelection to the House of Representatives.

"From the moment I arrived in Congress, Steny Hoyer has been a dear friend and invaluable mentor to me and so many of my Democratic colleagues. Throughout his extraordinary tenure, he has been a champion for the people of Maryland and a powerful force for good whose leadership in the Democratic Caucus was instrumental in improving the lives of every day Americans.

"Leader Hoyer has never wavered in his commitment honoring the Civil Rights legacy of our district. He never missed a trip to Alabama to commemorate Bloody Sunday, and I will always cherish the memories we made alongside John Lewis and our colleagues during the annual pilgrimage.

"While I will miss him dearly, I know that Leader Hoyer's service to our nation will not end with his retirement. I thank him for his years of friendship and mentorship, and I wish his family the best as they begin the next chapter."
