Birmingham, AL – Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) released the following statement in response to news of the downsizing of U.S. Steel Tubular Operations and Fairfield Works plant in Fairfield, Alabama:

“I am very disheartened by U.S. Steel’s announcement that the Tubular Operations and Fairfield Works plant will see further layoffs at its Fairfield, Alabama facility. The impact that this plant's continued downsizing is having on the workers and their families who depend on these critically important jobs to make ends meet is deeply concerning. While my hope is that this reduction will only be temporary, it is imperative that we work together to minimize the impact of these layoffs on the lives of these hardworking men and women,” states Representative Sewell.

“U.S. Steel is an integral part of our local and regional economy, and I am proud to stand with union members of the United Steelworkers as we work to assist workers affected by this announcement. As I did with the recent Custom's bill, I pledge to continue to do my part to sponsor legislation that will make it easier for the American Steel industry to enforce anti-dumping efforts by foreign steel companies. Congress must do more to help companies like U.S. Steel fairly compete so that they can sustain and create more good-paying jobs for Americans.”
