Rep. Sewell Applauds the FUTURE Act Becoming Law
December 17, 2019
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) applauded Congress’ passage of the FUTURE Act, legislation that permanently reauthorizes crucial mandatory funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and all Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs). The bill provides these institutions with $255 million in annual funding, which will provide the stability needed for long-term planning. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL) was the lead sponsor of the FUTURE Act in the Senate.
“The strength of HBCUs in Alabama is deeply personal for me as my parents are both proud graduates of Alabama State University. I would not be where I am today had my parents not received such a remarkable education at ASU,” Sewell said. “Alabama is proud to be the home of the most HBCUs in the country. The FUTURE Act will ensure that these historic institutions have the stability and certainty necessary to continue to provide quality education to future generations to come.”
“I want to thank Senator Jones for his tireless work in the Senate to shepherd this bill into law,” Sewell said. “He worked diligently with Senate Republicans to get this vital legislation over the finish line.”
The FUTURE Act also simplifies the FAFSA by eliminating up to 22 questions. By simplifying the burdensome FAFSA form, this bill removes a significant barrier for students who need financial assistance in order to afford college.
Alabama’s 14 HBCUs will receive over $9.5 million annually in funding as a result of the FUTURE Act.
