Statement by Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell in Observance of Labor Day
September 1, 2013
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) released the following statement to commemorate Labor Day:
“Today, we honor the working men and women of America and their proud history. We pay tribute to the values of hard work, responsibility and sacrifice that these individuals embody. As we celebrate this holiday and the progress our economy has made over the past year, we must not forget the obligation we have to America’s working families.
The resilience of the American workforce is responsible for the many benefits we too often take for granted—the 40 hour work week, social security, medicare, paid leave, and many more. These benefits were not handed to the American worker. They were hard fought by every working American that gets up every day to make an honest day’s pay, plays by the rules and meets their responsibilities. We all owe a debt of gratitude to the American worker.
I am especially proud to support the ‘Make It in America’ and ‘When Women Succeed, America Succeeds’ economic agendas, which highlight our commitment to raising the minimum wage, strengthening the middle class, and reviving our manufacturing base. I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress to pass and strengthen legislation that protects American workers. The American workforce is the cornerstone of a vibrant 21st Century economy and our policies must reflect a commitment to protecting their invaluable contributions.”
