Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released the following statement on the 13th anniversary of President Obama signing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law:

“On this day in 2010, President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law. Thirteen years later, it is undeniable that the ACA has had a profound impact on Alabama and our nation.

“Under the leadership of President Biden and Congressional Democrats, we have made extraordinary progress in strengthening the ACA and bringing down health care costs for Alabama families. Today, more Alabamians and more Americans are insured than ever before and those with pre-existing conditions can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that they are protected from being denied coverage. With the American Rescue Plan, we lowered premiums for 219,000 Alabamians through the ACA marketplace and locked in those savings in the Inflation Reduction Act. Starting this year, no senior will pay more than $35 per month for insulin, and soon, our provisions to cap prescription drug costs and negotiate drug prices will take effect, providing critical savings for our seniors.

“To be clear, our work is far from over. In Congress, I am fighting every day to save Alabama’s rural hospitals, close the Medicaid coverage gap, and continue to bring down costs. I will continue to vigorously oppose attempts by my Republican colleagues to cut Medicare, strip Americans of their health care coverage, and roll back our progress.

“In this great nation of so much wealth and prosperity, no American should go without health care coverage. After all, access to quality, affordable health care is a right and not a privilege. I will continue working to improve the Affordable Care Act and bring down health care costs for the great people I represent.”
