Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-7) released the following statement in recognition of National Women’s History Month:

“Each year, we pause during the month of March to celebrate the significant accomplishments that women have made in this nation. It is an opportunity to reflect on the enduring legacies of Susan B. Anthony, Mary McCleod Bethune and Dorothy Height as well as a chance to highlight the amazing contributions of pioneering Alabama women like Helen Keller, Rosa Parks, Alexis Herman, Lily Ledbetter and Condoleezza Rice.

I am particularly proud of the role that Alabama women have played in carrying the banner for women’s rights and paving the way for women across this country. But at a time when women still make 78 cents for every dollar a man makes and only 93 women serve in the US Congress, we still have more work to do.

As we reflect on the 2012 Women’s History Month theme, ‘Women’s Education—Women’s Empowerment’, we should all make a commitment to encourage, inspire and motivate the next generation of women to dream bigger, travel farther and aggressively knock down the existing barriers of inequality, inequity and increasing attacks on the rights of women.

I commend and pay tribute to the women who courageously fought to ensure that the rights, opinions and intelligence of women are forever a part of the fabric of America.”
