Birmingham, AL – On Friday, Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (AL-D) delivered remarks at a Naturalization Ceremony in Mobile, Alabama, honoring 41 new citizens after they took their Oaths of Allegiance. Fifteen federal and state court judges presided over the naturalization ceremony and Mobile Bar Association President Jean Powers delivered closing remarks.

“The men and women who took their Oath of Allegiance today are now part of our American family, and I am honored to be among the first to welcome them as new citizens of the United States,” said Rep. Sewell. “We are a nation of immigrants, made stronger by our diversity, and the forty-one new citizens sworn in today make our country stronger still for the ideas, skills, and perspectives they have to offer. Taking the Oath of Allegiance gives our new citizens both rights and a responsibility to help our nation write the next chapter of American history. Today’s ceremony represents the foundation of what makes our country great, where people of all backgrounds come together as citizens of one united nation.”

The naturalization ceremony was held on Friday, May 11, in Mobile at the U.S. District Court, S.D. Ala. Naturalization ceremonies are the final step of the process to becoming a US citizen. Oaths of Allegiance are administered by judges or the USCIS in a judicial ceremony. After completing the oath, applicants receive their official Certificate of Naturalization.
