Press Releases

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) released a video message ahead of President Joe Biden’s first State of the Union Address. The video can be accessed and downloaded here.

Sewell’s remarks are transcribed below:

Hi, I’m Congresswoman Terri Sewell and I’m here in our nation’s capital getting ready to attend President Biden’s first State of the Union Address. Tonight, I’ll join my colleagues in the House Chamber as President Biden lays out his vision to Build a Better America and his optimism for the future of this great nation.

I am also excited to hear President Biden speak directly to the American people about the historic progress we’ve made and his plan to address the challenges that lay ahead.

Already, President Biden and Congressional Democrats have delivered on our promise to grow our economy from the bottom up and the middle out.

Thanks to the historic American Rescue Plan, our economy achieved the fastest job growth in American history, the fastest economic growth in nearly 40 years, and a faster recovery than every other advanced economy in the world.

Now, thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re creating millions more good paying jobs, all while we rebuild our roads and bridges, modernize our wastewater and drinking water systems, invest in public transportation networks, eliminate blocked train crossings, and expand access to broadband for every American.

We’ve also made historic progress in the fight against COVID-19 as we move safely toward returning to our normal routines. Today, hundreds of millions of Americans are vaccinated and 99% of our nation’s schools are open, proving what we can accomplish when we work together and beat a common enemy.

Together, we must build this historic progress. I look forward to working closely with the Biden-Harris Administration to lower costs, invest in our small businesses, strengthen our democracy, reduce gun violence, and tackle inflation by strengthening our supply chains and making more goods here in America.

I am also looking forward to hearing the President address the troubling situation in Ukraine. Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified war is causing needless suffering and death, and as Americans, we stand with the Ukrainian people. I am proud that this President has taken decisive action to unite our NATO allies in support of democracy and isolate Russia from the rest of the world.

Like President Biden, I know that it is never a good idea to bet against the American people. We in Alabama’s 7th District know that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary social progress when we put our minds to it.

Thank you, and I hope you’ll join me by tuning into President Biden’s first State of the Union Address tonight at 8pm CT!
