BIRMINGHAM, AL –Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell (D-AL) announced today her office will roll out a workforce development initiative designed to facilitate employment in Alabama's 7th Congressional District by promoting public/private partnerships, job readiness, skills training and career development.  The initiative is called  “Project R.E.A.D.Y” which stands for Realizing Every one’s Ability to Develop Yourself.  Project R.E.A.D.Y will consist of a series of workforce training workshops conducted throughout the 7th congressional district by career professionals in partnership with educational institutions and other members of the Congresswoman Sewell’s Workforce Advisory Council.

Congresswoman Sewell announced formation of the Workforce Advisory Council (WAC) that will serve as key partners in advising her office on issues affecting workforce development in Alabama’s 7th congressional district.  The Council will be composed of local employers, state and educational institutions as well as non-profits that focus on career training and development. Commitments to join the Congresswoman’s Workforce Advisory Council have already been received by: Lawson State Community College, Jeff State Community College, University of West Alabama, Alabama Career Center, Alabama Power, Hyundai and Mercedes Benz to name a few.   The Council will partner in providing the Project READY workshops and assist in developing legislation and local efforts to promote job readiness and training throughout the 7th congressional district.

Congresswoman Sewell stated: “I am so excited about this new workforce initiative Project R.E.A.D.Y.  Job creation remains my top priority.  I am proud of the efforts my office has taken to address the issue of high unemployment which has been a systematic problem in the 7th Congressional district. We plan to continue to host an annual Job Fair event in the district.  The Project READY workshops offer another way we can provide employment resources and opportunities to our constituents. I want to thank our Workforce Advisory Council participants for partnering with us in this significant initiative.  I hope my constituents will take full advantage of a Project READY workshop coming soon to a town near them.”
