Moundville, AL – Today, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) announced that the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded $800,000 to the City of Moundville for improvements to Market Street in the downtown business district. The funding will be used to install new waterlines and storm water drainage lines, repair streets, replace sidewalks and fire hydrants, and install new lighting to improve the safety and functionality of downtown Moundville.
“I am absolutely thrilled that the City of Moundville has been awarded an additional $800,000 by the Appalachian Regional Commission for improvements to the downtown area,” said Rep. Sewell. “This funding will make a big difference for residents and businesses who call Moundville home. I can’t wait to see the impact it will have on this community.”
“The City of Moundville is extremely excited and honored to have been awarded the ARC grant,” said Moundville Mayor Tony Lester. “This will make a huge impact on our City by assisting us to improve our drinking water and storm drainage in our downtown area. Being awarded this grant will also improve the aesthetic view of our downtown area that will help us to attract and retain business which will in turn promote the growth of our community. We look forward to starting this project and enjoying the finished product for years to come.”
This grant is in addition to a $500,000 ARC grant awarded to Moundville in January 2025. The project will result in an improved downtown experience for visitors, minimal disruptions to businesses, and a cost savings over completing the work in two separate phases. Combined, ARC's investment will result in improved water service and an upgraded business environment for 20 businesses and 20 households.
The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments focusing on 423 counties across the Appalachian region. ARC's mission is to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in Appalachia and help the region achieve socioeconomic parity with the nation.
